NZIA National Award 09 for Residential Architecture - Multiple Housing
"This set of three apartments is an exemplar for inner city housing. These apartments may be compact but the spaces are generous, light-filled and welcoming. There is a natural and joyous expression of materials. Large areas of concrete block are enriched by beautifully crafted timber joinery and slatted or plywood ceilings. The semi enclosed courtyard of the main apartment and clerestory light-wells allow an ever-changing play of light across the concrete walls. The spaces are warm, firm and comfortable with an easy flow and a well considered balance between privacy and view. The building is both strong and gentle, protective and open and emanates a serene peacefulness that makes it a wonderful place to live."
Holidays beside the waters edge, water skiing and trout fishing, are wonderful memories for families. The bach is a keeper of these memories, which are at stake when work is done to preserve and update it.
It was a process of saving and improving, of folding in another layer of history in a way that would not obliterate the past. The result is a nest of humble kiwi buildings, some parts new some original, that will now cope admirably with the demands of the future.
"Mercer and Mercer took the time to find out about us as people first, and were intuitive to how we conversed with our environment. We have a home we intend to pass onto our children." - T & S Allan
"I dont think we ever realised how great it would be to live in a home built exactly for us, 2 small buildings on a hill that service our lifestyles to a T. I feel like we appreciate every sunset and dawn, and most of all every full moon sparkling its way across the firth." - Viv & Kirsty
"I have found the relationship and the attention to detail from all the staff at Mercer and mercer to be nothing less than outstanding. This has shown through in the quality of the finished projects." - Ross Collins, Reece Property Group (Aust.)
NZIA - Local Award 2007 - Residential. Judges citation:
"People seek Dick Mercer’s ranch style houses and rarely find them. This house demonstrates the continuity of a classic 1970’s architectural style in form and use of materials, and the understanding of how to use Waikato gullies and their view to best advantage. This house, originally designed by Dick Mercer, then extended by Dick in the 1990’s, and then extended again by his son Adam, appears seemless. It respects its rural site on the edge of a gully and allows easy living, in generous spaces. This home shows clearly that style can be timeless and that owners with excellent taste can assist in enhancing a classic home."
"As a building contractor I find the entire process of working alongside Adam and his team satisfying. Both our companies strive to deliver to meet our clients’ expectations. Working alongside Adam and his team allows us to achieve this." - Ash Hare, Director, Shorebuild
NZIA - Local Award 2004 - Residential. Judges citation:
"A shed for living in, this small house is a thoughtful and responsive design solution to challenging site and a modest budget. The rectangular plan form accommodates a central services core and creates a platform from which to ‘consume’ a view of the township and the wider landscape. Proof indeed that good design is not necessarily synonymous with costly construction."
NZIA - Local Award 1999 - Residential. Judges citation
'A large but unpretentious family home crafted from natural materials to blend into the landscape. The expansive internal and external living areas capture the New Zealand vernacular in a style that has been refined by the architect over his distinguished career. Exceptional interior spaces create an immediate impression of competence and order.'

"Cooper and Company's vision of Britomart is a place that has a soul, where the people are bold and the culture is cool and a place that celebrates New Zealand...The Levy Building has been fully leased since completion with the tenants very happy with the finished result... We have no hesitation in confirming our endorsement of Mercer and Mercer Architects." - Jeremy Priddy, Director of leasing, Cooper and Company
"A very successful transition for the existing tenant into their purpose built building. The efficiency and professionalism which Mercers showed on the job made a difficult build process seem easy."
Who said industrial can't be handsome.
"I will always be grateful for Adam's vision and the design that came out of it. Had i not engaged him, my team and i would be working in a utilitarian collection of boxes. Instead we have a space that inspires us and impresses our visitors!" - Jim Burdett, Director, Mind and Body
